What’s that? Quick government recap: citizens living in a city have to follow the rules of the city, and also those of the county, and also, the state, and also the nation. It’s a government layer cake.

And each layer collects its own taxes to enforce its own rules. If some folk find these layers oppressive, they can hitch their wagons and head for open lands outside the borders of any city — to live like the rugged individualists they are — free of rules. Well, except for those of the nation, and also the state, and also the county — but moving outside a city, there’s one fewer ‘and also’ layer because they are in an unincorporated place. But if they make it nice and the population grows, inevitably people want police and sewers and schools and rules. And soon, a charter is written, a mayor elected and a city incorporated. What makes Paradise weird is that unlike most unincorporated places that contain mostly blowing tumbleweeds and perhaps a yurt where nobody wants to live, there are almost a quarter million residents in Paradise in a space the size of Disney World.

That density is *way* past the point you’d expect people to incorporate a city. And it’s not like Paradiseians just couldn’t bother, Paradise is almost unique in being *officially* unincorporated … so… why? It started with the Mormons who first settled these lands in the 1880s… actually no — jump cut to: 1950! When we still tested out nuclear bombs in the open, near population centers. Nevada^† recently legalized gambling and a casino empire grew in Vegas.

Well — *just* outside of it to avoid city taxes. As for necessary services, the casinos were rich enough to provide their own notably, using their security forces as de facto police. Which might not sound on the up and up, but this was the mob running things — and of course they don’t any more. Actually, really, they don’t, it’s all run by about two companies now.^‡ Anyway, the official City of Las Vegas in the 1950s was on the verge of bankruptcy — and with profitable casinos touching its border, the mayor was all like, ‘who are you kidding?, this is totally part of Las Vegas because I say so, and you’re going to pay Las Vegas taxes.’

The Casinos said ‘no’. There was a dispute that only the county, the next level of government up, could resolve. Total Annihilation Game Review

Ingame TA has it strengths too because this was the first game which used real physics so projectiles get further when the have the advantage of wind and/or height. Yes the game has that, it has wind and it uses the most accurate height physics used until today. Cars can’t go up certain hills and the same goes for the walking bots, but you get an advantage using high grounds. This gives a whole new meaning to gameplay because now you can use even more tactics to win a battle.

Graphics: Even for today’s standards the game looks good. Great explosions, flying debris the fact you can see height in the landscape you can all find it here it’s just incredible. And best of all the game is 4,5 years old at the time of writing and it supports resolutions up to 1600×1200, absolutely amazing. The textures are great and all the animation runs smooth.

Personally I still believe Total Annihilation has one of the most impressive starting movie I have seen.

Sound: Another point where Cavedog went totally on their own way. Instead of putting in rock music or techno to make it catchy for the younger gamers between us they choose for the classical orchestra. You have to get used to it in the beginning though but after you get over the first step then you will know why they used this. Atmosphere 100% atmosphere, the bombastic music creates a more dramatic feel to the game. As a result the gameplay will even become more intense than it already was. Another advantage is the fact that this classical approach has little effect over the years instead of modern types of music which are heavily under change when time goes on.

The effects appartment did a great job too with the cool explosive and laser sounds. Just slam the volume on 10 and let the rest of the city join the mayhem you are starting 🙂

Under the Ocean Game Review

Personally, the only Castaway-like games I ever really played were: Sims Castaway, Virtual Villagers, and The Villagers. But unlike Under the Ocean,  in those games, you’re basically taking care of a group of people so it’s more like Lost than the solo adventures of Tom Hanks and his inanimate buddy, Wilson. Needless to say the solo survival aspect of Under the Ocean intrigued me while its aesthetics and features hooked me. In terms of other games sharing the same genre, it has revamped some features in the game and for me personally, made them unique in its own way. I know that’s pretty vague so I’ll get on with the review for y’all you lovely readers.

First Impression and Gameplay

Pleasing to the eyes and ears this game is (Yoda voice)

I fire up the game and was greeted by a beautiful melody in the background. In my opinion, its serene yet melancholic which I think is perfect for the game. I know I can listen to it all day everyday. I was given 3 options to choose from: Base Game, Free Build, Random (New feature).

Possibly one of the prettiest mode selection interface I’ve ever seen 😡

3 Modes:

  • Base Game: Normal mode pretty much. You explore the island, craft and survive with the items you can scavenge and eventually try to get home.
  • Free Build: Go cray cray with building whatever the fudge sticks you want! You’re pretty much set in terms of materials. Think of the creative mode of minecraft except instead of having all the items in a nice window, the items in Under The Ocean basically gets dropped on your cranium. As you keep walking on, every new destination has a different mine of materials.

The Giants

You can pretty much see the influence Black and White 2 gave the game in terms of using Giants to do the Gods/Goddesses wishes. I want to make clear however, that that is pretty much where the similarities end. You will find in the interview that the game, and I am guessing the use of giants as well; was also influenced by this awesome short story animation (which was the inspiration of the game, you all should watch it). Now, couple things about these cute giants. First is that each giants have their own type of terraforming depending on what kind of giants they are, such as: Swamp, Ocean, Mountain, and Forest. The other thing is, you must have each giant work together to really help the settlers prosper in their civilization.

As you progress in the game, your giants gain new aspects. Aspects are basically abilities that buffs up the floras, faunas, and minerals you plopped down  in a number of ways, such as giving it another trait. Ex: Enhancing a peppermint tree with the herb aspect would give it the food trait. Not only that, if you used the right aspect on whatever it is you are using it on, it may even give it the power of transmutation (you will read about transmutation below).

First Impression and Gameplay


This opening scene made me aww…then it made me all grrr towards my fellow humans.

The Opening Scene


I want to talk about the opening scene first because I really think it is something worth watching. The art style for me was personally cute with its caveman/child-like drawings, but the story it conveys is a serious issue and I think, something to be seen because it is true. What I mean is, even though we do not really have giants magically terraforming the earth to help us, we ARE still hurting mother nature with our greed for the resource. I know I may sound like a hippie or tree hugger but we are over harvesting and overusing natural resources faster than the time earth can recuperate and as the opening scene shows, when civilizations get greedy, we do wage war against neighbors. I understand some people may say, well it is just an opening scene, calm the heck down. However, I really appreciate that it shows those things and the game’s mechanics covers that. It makes it more real for me.


Art style/Visual


Reus opted for a 2D side scrolling graphic style which I actually found lovely, clean, and refreshing. If you guys played that iPhone game called Goldfinger, it will remind you of that. I personally like it this way because you focus more on the game content than beastly graphics. Plus, just look at the Giants!!! I want one

My Personal Opinion Concerning The HUD and Font Size


This is my personal issue, maybe others also have it, but I find the font too small that it strains my eyes after a little bit. I do however like the game’s HUD because I find it informative yet it’s still clean. What I mean is that some complex games tend to overdo it with the information they try to cram on the screen and it can be overwhelming to new players. I’ve actually met people who quit the game they want to play just by staring at HUDs like that. Reus may not be complex to some, but the ones I’ve talked to who played the game told me it is, so this is something they probably appreciate. Another thing is, feel free to correct me if I missed it; is that there seem to be no indicator whether symbiosis and specialization is active or not. I only know it is because I try to remember how much each things originally gave (food, wealth, tech) and then I check if they’re higher. To those who have not played Reus, this may be confusing, but don’t worry I’ll break it down for ya in a bit.

What got me interested: I am actually a huge fan of good games. I just absolutely love them!  I like having the power over civilizations and taking care of them with all the kindness and love every benevolent god bestow upon their people. I also love to save the game, then start smiting left and right as I maniacally laugh in front of my computer which not only baffles those by me, but I was told it also scared them. As mentioned, I love Black and White 2, and I still believe to this day nothing can really compare to that game when it comes to the god game genre. I’ve been looking around the internet and waiting for a game that will even come close to BW2. Seems like my patience paid off with this game. It did not only gave me a BW2 nostalgia but it also gave me a whole new experience which I totally appreciate because as much as I love BW2, I still also yearn for something that’s different and can stand on its own. I personally think Reus has that capability.
